  • Origin and Characteristics
Shorea also known as Balau or Bankarai, is a tropical hardwood, which grows naturally and plentifully in the Pacific Rim countries of Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Burma. The tree reaches a height of 100-130 foot, at the most 200 foot. The smooth cylindrical trunk is 3 to 5 foot in diameter, at the most 16 foot.

The wood is cross-grained and textured moderately coarse, and warping is virtually none. Shorea has much of the same properties and characteristics of teak, but shorea is much denser, stronger and heavier than teak.

    Our product and other applications
Shorea is somewhat less expensive than teak due to its abundance in nature. Shorea is not endangered, as teak is. The wood is naturally weather and bug resistant, and does not rot. Shorea is used extensively in many outdoor applications, such as bridge and shipbuilding, truck decking, outdoor decking, and of course outdoor furniture.

Yellow Balau, the most durable of the shorea family, is what we use in the production of our furniture. We use only 100% kiln dried wood, and tenon and mortise joinery, which contributes to its strength and durability. All of the hardware used in our furniture is of solid brass. If left untreated the product will finish to a soft gray, and to maintain it’s original color you must apply one coat of teak oil seasonally. Shorea has a life expectancy of 50-60 years.
